The whole complex is located in a large valley filled with olive groves and vineyards, on the road of "Sagrantino", a few kilometers from Montefalco, home of this noble and famous wine.
Therefore, in addition to art and culture, the surrounding area is also a food tourism destination because of the proximity of important wine cellars where wines are bottled as Sagrantino and Rosso di Montefalco. A few kilometers from Assisi, Todi and Spoleto, in the heart of Umbria, is cultivated one of the most precious native grapes of Italy, Sagrantino. Among these hills covered with vineyards and olive groves, where there are towers, villages and medieval castles (scattered around the territory around Gualdo Cattaneo we can count 14), extending a cultural and gastronomic crossing for 60 km countries where tradition wine is not confined outside the urban fabric, but is an integral part of it: "The road of Sagrantino".
The production area covers the entire territory of the municipalities of Montefalco, Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, Castel Ritaldi and Giano dell'Umbria sites in the province of Perugia.
History tells us that the variety of Montefalco Sagrantino is reached thanks to the Franciscan friars who came from Asia Minor. Due to be handed down and the improvement of farming techniques, but also thanks to the special "structure" of the land area, the Sagrantino is over the years become the flagship Umbrian enology.
The Sagrantino wine was born as "Sweet", although currently prevailing version "Secco". At one time, in fact, this wine was produced exclusively in the type "Raisin", and obtained by drying the grapes on wooden racks.
This production technique was very congenial to the Sagrantino grapes, able to wither for months without rotting and the grapes that preserve intact the long-sugar component. Both in the "Dry" or as "Raisin", aging is expected to at least thirty months, of which, for the "Dry", at least twelve in wooden barrels. This allows you to get a ruby ​​red wine with garnet, aromas of blackberries and taste hot and spicy.
